According to the survey about April Fool’s Day jointly conductedby Horizon Research Consultancy Group and Baidu top key word list, expressinglove on April Fool’s Day overcomes that on Valentine’s Day in popularity. Womenand young people and people living in urban areas favor showing their affectionon April 1st, April Fool’s Day.
Expressing love on April Fool’s Day is far morepopular than that on Valentine’s Day. The comparison ofBaidu indexes since 2010 shows that the users of the key word “expressing loveon April Fool’s Day” are alwayscatching more attention than those of “expressing love on Valentine’s Day”. Andthe increasing gap between the two fully indicates that the popularity ofexpressing affection on April Fool’s Day is soaring. By the week before AprilFool’s Day of 2012, the attention on the users of relevant key words hasincreased by 283%, reckoning that another Valentine’s Day within the same yearis around the corner.

The Baidu usersaged 20-29 pays the most attention to expressing love on April Fool’s Day, leadingthat of the users expressing love on Valentine’s Day with large margin. Butafter 30, people will find their interest in showing affection on April 1stdecrease with the increase of age. While people aged 30-39 halve in theirattention to expressing love on either day, people aged 40-49 still cares moreabout expressing their love to each other on the traditional Valentine’s Day.
Residents in Pearl River Deltaand Yangtze River Delta prefer to express loveon April Fool’s Day. Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsuare the top three provinces preferring “expressing love on April Fool’s Day”,especially the users in Guangdong Province who show far more interest on itthan those in other regions. And the users in Beijing rank the fourth place nationwide.
From themajor microblog websites, we can find that the initial motive for people chooseto express their love on April Fool’s Day is to show their true affection toeach other on this very day when people can play tricks and avoid theembarrassment of being rejected. But the surveyors of Horizon Research Consultancy Group believe that the in-depthreason for the “Valentinization of April Fool’s Day” lies in the non-mainstreamtrend of today’s festive culture.
On the onehand, various non-mainstream festivals have emerged in recent years, such as“Lovely Day” on October 10th and “Loli’ Day” on October 11th;on the other hand, people find that the original culture of some festivals haveundergone some little changes, for example, Valentine’s Day has a new interpretationand is now related to extramarital love affair (The attention on “extramaritallove affair” climaxed before and after the Valentine’s Day of 2012).
